Deputy Sheriff of the Year 2011

09/30/2011

On Tuesday, September 27th, 2011, The Missouri Deputy Sheriff’s Association held its annual Banquet at Port Arrowhead in Lake Ozark.  Corporal Jason Higgins of the Camden County Sheriff’s Office, was presented with the Missouri Deputy Sheriff of the Year Award.

Corporal Higgins has served with the Camden County Sheriff’s Office since March 11, 2008.

On May 14th, 2011, Corporal Higgins was investigating a “walk-away” from a Care Facility. Information was given that a male subject had walked away from a care center. It was reported that the male subject was making threats toward his family members.

The sheriff’s office had previous encounter with this individual earlier in the year regarding his initial commitment. During that incident the subject threatened a deputy with bodily harm.

Corporal Higgins and Sgt Charles Manes located the individual’s vehicle outside of a residence located on State Road D. Upon Corporal Higgins knocking on the door, the subject opened the door holding a .22 caliber handgun. The subject pointed the gun at Higgins, Higgins was able to grab the gun and push the subjects arm away. Corporal Higgins then forced his way through the door and tackled the subject, taking him to the ground inside the entryway. During the struggle to gain control of the subject, the firearm discharged, and the bullet went into the kitchen floor. Corporal Higgins was then joined by Sergeant Manes and the suspect was taken into custody. No one was injured during the altercation.

Sheriff Dwight Franklin states “Corporal Higgins’ actions exemplify the high level of dedication, commitment and service our communities have come to expect from deputies of the Camden County Sheriff’s Office. Please join me in congratulating Corporal Higgins on receiving this well-deserved award and recognition.”
